Football is just our thing.

Desi has either played or coached football since he was 8 years old. He does not know life without it and there is nothing I love more than watching his face while he is watching or coaching the game.

This year has been the first year that he has not been involved in some sort of football program during the fall. It’s been hard for him but we both know that it is just a matter of time before he is back on the field.

Hands down the biggest game in Air Force football is when the Falcons take on the Naval Academy. I am not allowed to even say the “N” word in the house. It’s a serious rivalry y’all, the SEC ain’t got nothing on this.

So seeing as the number of Saturdays spent watching college football games on the coach with my love by my side and not on the field are numbered, I wanted to make sure I made this game as special as possible.

I call it “home-gating” friends.

We headed for the future in-laws house and I decked the place out.

Mason Jar.

White Sparkle Washi Tape.

Paper Straw in appropriate colors.

Fill with rootbeer, vanilla vodka and ice.

What says tailgate more than Frito Pie?

So what more is a home gating girl to do than create a Frito Pie bar!?

This was so simple.

Put a big ol’ bag of Fritos in a bowl.

Top it with your favorite chili recipe.

Dress it up with toppings galore.

We used onions, pickled jalepenos, pepper jack and cheddar cheese, guacamole and of course a little dollop of sour cream. This is where you can get creative!

I made my batch of chili earlier in the morning and let it simmer in the crock pot until kick-off time.

1 pound of ground turkey (or beef, but we are on a wedding diet clearly)

1 diced onion

Cook these two together on the stove until the meat is cooked through.

Dump the following in your crock pot with the meat and onions

1 zucchini, diced

1 red bell pepper, diced

1 yellow bell pepper, diced

1 tomato, diced

2 cans of 15 ounce canned tomatoes

1 can kidney beans

1 can black beans

1 can chili beans

1 packet of LAWERY’S chili seasoning

Some chili powder for a little heat

Sit back and watch your team kick some Navy booty while this bad boy cooks away

Love is in the details.

It doesn’t have to cost much (I spent $25 for the decorations, thank you Target) it doesn’t have to be a fancy gourmet meal, it doesn’t have to be planned months in advance. Decorating some mason jars and writing on a banner was a simple way I could show Desi that I am proud of him and I cherish these times sitting watching football on the couch with him.

Everyday spent with loved ones deserves to be celebrated, make them special.

Oh, and yes we did win 28-14 baby! Just the cherry on top.
